These streetside pantries seem to be popping up all over the place. It seems that some pretty cool people have got together to create the (Pātaka Kai) Open Street Pantry Movement.
It is all about neighbours helping neighbours and building community. People take what they need and give what they can. So easy! and what a wonderful way to give back to your community - check out your neighbourhood or start one up yourself.
“Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi
With your basket and my basket we will sustain the people”
They also run a food share map so if you have an abundance of fruit, nuts or produce you can add it to the map.
All you have to do is enter what it is, when it's in season and an approximate location. You can also request that people phone/email to get permission before they front up to your property but many of the trees and near the street so that's not a problem and there are also gardens in public areas.
